QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

  1. What are the nationalities of the teachers?

    Our teachers are from many countries and are native English speakers. In 2211, We have teachers from Australia, Canada, England, Philippines, Poland, and The United States of America. We strongly believe that qualified and committed teachers create the learning atmosphere need for students to be all they can be.

  2. Is East-West registered with the Cambodian Ministry of Education?

    Yes we are registered. Our students learn Khmer and sit the Cambodian Grade 6, Grade 9 and Grade 12 exams.

  3. Is EWIS accredited by an external body?

    East-West is a candidate school with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This organization is based in California, USA and accredits schools in the USA and in the Asia / Pacific region.

    WASC accreditation gives credibility to the standard of our teaching and allows for easy transfer between schools.

  4. Who are the students?

    East-West accepts students from every nationality.

  5. What is the medium of instruction?

    All classes are taught in English except Khmer language. In Grades 9 and 10 there are also a Korean language class.

  6. What subjects are offered?

    There are five core subjects – English, Khmer, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. As well as these subjects there are special subjects offered to all classes from Kindergarten and up. These are Art, Sport, Library, Swimming, Performing Arts, and ICT (Computer).

  7. How is the Pre-school different?

    Pre-school is for 2 year olds (Nursery), 3 year olds (Pre-school 1) and 4 year olds (Pre-school 2). This program is for half a day for 5 days a week. All classes are taught in English. There is an emphasis on speaking, listening, answering. The children sing songs and play games. They have a fun time and learn at the same time.

  8. Will EWIS provide a high school program?

    In the school 2011 / 2012 East-West is offering classes from Nursery to Grade 9. By 2014 EWIS will have classes from Nursery to Grade 12.

  9. After graduation can East-West students go to university?

    Our Cambodian students will sit for the Year 12 Cambodian exams. If they pass they will gain the Cambodian Certificate which will allow them to apply to Cambodian universities.

    We have not yet decided which course of study to offer Years 11 and 12. We will only consider those courses that will allow our students to enter universities in other countries. This, of course, depends on the exam results.

    WASC accreditation will provide the assurance for our programs for the USA. Our students may also be able to sit the SAT exams. If the marks are high enough the result will allow entry into US universities. We are investigating what is required to gain entry into Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and Asian regional universities.

    We want our graduating students to have as many options as possible.

  10. How long is the school year?

    East-West has a minimum of 180 teaching days. The Khmer holidays are observed. There is a two week vacation in December / January.
    There is an 8 week vacation in July and August.

  11. Does EWIS provide transportation?

    A school bus is available to transport to and from school. The cost is determined by the distance from the school. It is an optional service.

  12. Does EWIS provide medical care?

    EWIS staff will provide first aid for your child in theevent of a small injury or sudden illness. The administrative staff will contact you if further medical assistance is required or if your child is too sick to stay at school. In the event of a medical emergency the school will make every effort to contact the parents. If the parents cannot be contacted, the school will seek medical assistance or take the child to get medical assistance. EWIS cannot provide any other medical assistance. Any medical costs are parents' responsibility and not the responsibility of the School.
